This video of nearly 5 minutes includes interviews with vegetable growers who have been in the industry for a long time, talking about the development of irrigation systems in vegetable growing. They describe irrigation systems made up of galvanised pipes, hoses and sprinklers fed by mains water; how they had to move them all by hand; and the progression to the systems of today that are mechanised and computer controlled.

  • This resource may be of some value for year 7 students of science, considering how technology has transformed agriculture and, in particular, vegetable growing. The farmers interviewed provide a snapshot of irrigation practices in the past and describe their motivations for moving to more technologically advanced farming practices. The resource describes the context for technological innovation in simple language.
