Video Food wastage footprint

TLF ID M017161

This is an animated video about the extent of global food wastage, its short- and long-term effects and how it can be minimised. Stating that about one-third of the food produced in the world each year is lost or wasted, the video uses concrete examples to show what this means in terms of land area, water, natural habitats, biodiversity and emission of greenhouse gases. It explains why cannot continue and suggests strategies that can be used by food producers, retailers, consumers and policymakers to reverse the food wastage pyramid currently based on garbage in landfill. The video, which is about three minutes long, concludes with a call to action requiring commitment from all.

Educational value
  • This dynamic resource is useful for the year 9 geography unit of study, Biomes and food security. The resource is directly relevant to the content description about the capacity of the world's environments to sustainably feed the projected future population and indirectly relevant to the content description about the challenges to food production, including land and water degradation, shortage of fresh water, competing land uses, and climate change. The video explains how food wastage undermines the capacity of the world to feed its present and future population and exacerbates the challenges to food security.
  • The video's strong call for individual and collective action and the strategies it suggests make it valuable for the sustainability cross-curriculum priority. It is particularly supportive of the priority's organising idea that designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments, and balanced judgements based on projected future economic, social and environmental impacts.
  • The video forms part of the Food Wastage Footprint project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It draws upon the project's 2011 and 2013 reports on the impacts of global food wastage from the perspectives of food security, economic damage and environmental harm.
