Video Reforestation as a climate change strategy

TLF ID M017155

This is a video about an agroforestry project to restore the tree cover of microwatersheds in the High Andes of Peru in which the Chumbivilcas community worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund. Interviews with the local mayor and project officers emphasise the value of these water sources in a context of climate change. Chumbivilcas community members are shown growing and looking after the saplings. The seven-minute video concludes with a summary of project findings.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the geography curriculum in years 7 and 9. In year 7 it is particularly valuable for the Water and the world unit of study, especially for the content descriptions about the nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it, and about the economic and cultural value of water for people. The people of the High Andes in Peru recognise water scarcity as a problem that will get worse with climate change and point to the need to retain water in the soil and generate humidity to ensure manageable downstream flows; sustainable agroforestry techniques offer them hope for the future.
  • The video is also valuable for the three content descriptions in the year 9 Biomes and food security unit of study that refer to human alteration of biomes and the environmental effects of these alterations; the challenges to food production, including shortage of fresh water; and the capacity of the world's environments to sustainably feed the projected future population. The Andean alpine biome has been severely affected by deforestation, and the joint project of the FAO and the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund that operated in the High Andean microwatersheds from 2008 to 2012 was designed to help rectify this.
