Educational value
  • This is a highly valuable resource that is relevant to many content descriptions in the years 4, 6, 7 and 9 Biological sciences and Use and influence of science substrands. It is particularly valuable for looking at the growth of plants, ecosystems, food webs and interactions between organisms, and how human actions can affect these. It is also useful for investigating the role of science in understanding the environment and the effect of agriculture on ecosystems.
  • The resource is of significant value for content descriptions in years 4, 9 and 10 of the geography curriculum, and is particularly relevant for investigating the natural resources provided by the environment and their sustainable use. It supports learning about how humans have altered biomes to produce food, including how crop yields are improved through increased fertiliser application. It is also useful for considering the concept of ecosystem services, the sustainability of human activities, and the environmental effects of human changes to environments.
  • The resource is valuable for the design and technologies curriculum in years 3 to 6, as it investigates the production of food in a range of different farming systems including traditional and modern ones. It is useful for looking at the sustainability of past and present food production technologies and how decisions are made about what to produce based on local climatic conditions, equipment and resources.
  • The resource has some value for the content description in the year 10 history curriculum that looks at how international organisations have responded to environmental threats since the 1960s. The resource contains a description of the 1992 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and provides an international response to concerns about loss of the world's natural resources.
