This resource is an online unit of work found on the Australian Government’s International Property (IP) website in the ‘IP In Schools’ section. The unit contains six worksheets (available in both PDF and Rich Text Format) that focus on the use of symbolism in the Australian flag and the Aboriginal flag. The worksheets examine symbols of: Australia, the Australian flag and the Aboriginal flag. There is also background information on the Aboriginal flag and a discussion-starter on changing the Australian flag. Students can also use symbols to design their own flag.

  • This is a very useful resource to support inquiries of national symbols and emblems in Humanities and Social Sciences learning area. It is specifically targeted at exploring the importance of the Aboriginal flag as a symbol of identity and the rules that govern its use.
  • This unit of work would be useful for the Responding strand of the upper primary Visual Arts curriculum, especially for content descriptions that refer to using appropriate visual language to describe, explain and justify representational choices and point of view. If students designed their own flag, it would also be useful for the Making strand of the upper primary Visual Arts curriculum, especially for content descriptions that mention experimenting with representing ideas or concepts that express a personal point of view.
  • This resource would also be useful for the Literacy strand of the upper primary English curriculum, particularly for content descriptions that involve using comprehension strategies to interpret and analyse information and ideas, comparing content from a variety of textual sources including media and digital texts.
