Image Earthshots: satellite images of environmental change - Lake Chad, Africa

This resource is a series of satellite images of Lake Chad in Africa, showing its decline due to prolonged drought and increased water use from 1963 to 2003, accompanied by a text explanation, including a brief history of the lake. The text describes the geographical features of the freshwater lake, the effect of the region's variable rainfall on the lake and the fluctuations of the lake over time including its geological history. The text also describes how the people living around Lake Chad are vulnerable to food insecurity and use various strategies to survive, including farming the lake bottom. The resource includes a link to references.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the Water in the world unit of study in the year 7 geography curriculum. It is of particular use for the content description referring to the nature of water scarcity, and ways of overcoming it, including case studies from Australia and/or north Africa. It would also be valuable for the Biomes and food security unit of study in year 9, particularly for the content description referring to the challenges to food security including shortage of fresh water and climate change. The resource could also be useful for Geographical Inquiry and Skills.
