TLF ID M013838

This is a rich resource about the lives of Muslim people who came to Australia from Asia and Europe in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Developed by the National Archives of Australia, it consists of a historical essay by Hanifa Deen illustrated by a collection of archival documents and images. The resource has five tabs: arrivals; stories; fragments; timeline; and records. The first three contain the 17 'chapters' of the essay and links to more than 200 sources. The timeline covers the period 1860 to 1972 and the records tab lists the records referred to in the essay and includes an extensive bibliography.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a comprehensive and valuable resource for studies of Muslim migration to Australia in the years 6, 9 and 10 history curriculum. Not only does it support all the content descriptions in the year 10 'Migration experiences' depth study, it is also highly relevant for content descriptions in years 6 and 9 about the stories of groups of people who migrated to Australia and the reasons they migrated, and about the experiences of non-Europeans in Australia prior to the 1900s. Among the people profiled are Samsudin bin Katib, a pearl diver; Shadee Khan, a hawker; and Sheikh Fehmi Naji El-Imam, Australia's longest serving imam.
  • The resource is of considerable value for the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority. It enables students to see how our histories are linked from ancient times to the present and to investigate how Australians of Asian heritage have influenced Australia's history, culture and society. Stories in the resource also reveal how racist attitudes enacted in the White Australia Policy and in internment policies in World War II affected the lives of Muslim people of Asian heritage in Australia.
