Teacher guide Mapping Aboriginal knowledge of the bush

TLF ID M013835

This is a resource about a collaborative study carried out by the CSIRO and the Aboriginal peoples of the Northern Territory and Western Australia to map the peoples’ knowledge of bush tucker associated with the Daly and Fitzroy Rivers and develop seasonal calendars. The resource consists of an online article from ‘Australian Geographic’ by Natalie Muller accompanied by an image of Ngan’gi woman Molly Yawulminy hunting for long-necked turtle in the Daly River. The article describes the Ngan’gi calendar based on the life cycle of the spear grass and points out the value of recording Aboriginal ecological knowledge based on observation over thousands of years.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for the content description in the 'Water in the world' unit of study in the year 7 geography curriculum that refers to the economic, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic value of water for Aboriginal peoples. The article emphasises the value of the waterways for food, including prawns, barramundi, turtles and crocodile eggs. In year 1 geography the resource may also be of use for teachers in relation to the content description about the seasons.
  • The resource is especially valuable for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority. It is particularly supportive of the priority's central theme of identity, linked to, among other things, Aboriginal peoples' deep knowledge traditions, in this case Ngan'gi knowledge of the seasons, key plants and animals, environmental indicators and the importance of rivers, tides and wetlands.
