This is a web page consisting of an overview and two illustrations of practice on the GeogSpace website, a resource for teachers. Illustration 1 focuses on the use of inquiry in identifying the ways in which people shape the characteristics of places and the spaces within them, and developing the skill of working collaboratively with others to negotiate an agreed position. Illustration 2 develops understanding of the relationships between contemporary geographical issues and the media.

  • Illustration 1: Citizenship in action uses two scenarios to stimulate thought and discussion, and leading to debate, role play and decision making, to develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of citizenship.
  • Illustration 2: Contemporary geographical issues and the media develops understanding of the relationships between contemporary geographical issues and the media.
  • This resource contributes towards years 5 and 6 achievement standards of investigating, presenting findings in a range of communication forms, and reflecting on learning; framing an inquiry, evaluating sources, interpreting data and presenting findings and ideas.
