This is a web page consisting of an overview and two illustrations of practice on the GeogSpace website, a resource for teachers. The illustrations are designed to help teachers develop mastery of the aims and basic ideas of the Australian Curriculum: Geography, and the ways in which it develops general capabilities and links with other subjects. Illustration 1 focuses on supporting teachers in presenting concepts of geography. Illustration 2 is designed to provide guidelines for teachers on using maps, globes, atlases and electronic atlases.

  • Illustration 1: Pointers to understanding provides four PowerPoint presentations that teachers can use either for individual use or to generate discussion in a staff meeting.
  • Illustration 2: Globes, maps, atlases, electronic maps provides teachers with ideas and methods of using the world globe and an atlas in many imaginative ways to enhance students' skills in their use.
  • The resource relates to achievement standards of knowledge about places and space, as well as achievement standards related to skills of using globes, maps, atlases and electronic maps and atlases.
  • The resource supports the general capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability. It may also relate to the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia.
