This is a compilation of one teaching sequence about cooperation and cooperatives. It includes sections on cooperatives; the empowerment of women in a Batik cooperative in Indonesia; how the cooperative model has empowered local women; the Batik technique; and the International Year of Cooperatives.

Educational value
  • This resource may be of use for exploring human processes that explain characteristics of places in the year 5 Geography curriculum. It is relevant to the content description about the human and economic characteristics of places. The information about cooperatives and the geographical information about Indonesia offer knowledge to understand why people in different places arrange their lives and places in different ways. The focus on how cooperatives contribute to the empowerment of women, employment generation and economic growth contribute to inclusion of the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 5 Geography. It helps them recognise the human characteristics of places and identify changes that result from the interaction between people and environments and explain how these changes affect people and places.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 5 English. It helps them analyse and explain literal and implied information from a variety of texts.
  • It is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organizing idea that the sustainability of ecological, social and economic systems is achieved through informed individual and community action that values local and global equity and fairness across generations into the future.
  • The resource is relevant to the Intercultural understanding general capability. The case study encourages thinking about the lives of women in Indonesia and the role education and training can play in empowering them to work for a sustainable future.
