This is a web page with links to six learning objects: a Chinese country boy and a city girl swapping families; a Chinese Australian family's home renovations; an interview with a gongfu star; Chinese children's after-school activities; a stolen artefact mystery; and the Chinese Olympics. Each object consists of an animated scenario with Chinese audio and speech bubbles in simplified characters, accompanied by pinyin options and links to cultural and language notes in English, as well as interactive activities. The resource includes links to road maps, allowing users to record their progress, and links to teacher notes and other resources.

Educational value
  • This is a highly valuable resource for the Communicating and Understanding strands for years 5 to 8 in the Chinese second language learners' pathway. It is particularly relevant for maintaining conversations, exchanging personal information, expressing opinions and preferences, negotiating arrangements, identifying information from a flow of words, investigating aspects of home, school and social life in diverse Chinese communities, and sharing personal information related to identity, in a range of situations.
  • The resource is extremely useful for supporting students' ability to recognise familiar language spoken by different people, to associate spoken Chinese with pinyin, and to analyse characters. It also assists students to explore the use of Chinese among diverse communities. It helps students to compare values and beliefs across cultures and to reflect on how communication is shaped by the location, languages and cultures people identify with.
  • It is also relevant to the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority, particularly in relation to peoples and countries of Asia being diverse in ethnic background, traditions, cultures, belief systems and religions.
