This is a unit of inquiry made up of 12 learning sequences for year 7 in the English for the Australian Curriculum resource. Each learning sequence contains a series of resources, suggested activities to carry out with students and a post-activity reflection. Students focus on using critical literacy skills to explore consumer culture and the world of advertising. The unit will develop the students' understanding of the specific persuasive devices commonly used in print, television and online advertising. The students will use critical literacy strategies to inquire into both the obvious and the ambiguous messages behind advertising. They will undertake critical and creative work, including speaking and listening activities.

Educational value
  • This resource has 35 specific elaborations in activities and tasks in sequences for year 7 content descriptions across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands and sub-strands of the Australian Curriculum: English.
  • The resource contains a range of activities and tasks, supported by worksheets, with a series of formative assessment tasks throughout the unit. Links to relevant Curriculum content descriptions are provided for activities within sequences, summarised in a table format with links to elaborations in unit content, and are mapped on the website in overview tables for each unit, along with links to sequences for Cross-curriculum priorities and General capabilities.
  • The resource will help students attain the achievement standard for the year 7 in which students understand how text structures can influence the complexity of a text and are dependent on audience, purpose and context.
  • Concepts of consumer behaviour explored thoughout the resource relate to the cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability. The general capabilities of Literacy and Critical and creative thinking are a focus in all sequences; personal and social capability are developed through group work and sequences explore the capabilities of Ethical understandings and Numeracy.
