Text About marine energy

TLF ID M012973

This resource is a web page containing information about using the ocean's currents, tides or waves to generate electricity. It gives a brief description, with annotated diagrams, of one system that uses the movement of water to push hydraulic pistons which drive turbines. It also provides information about the potential use of marine energy in Australia and around the world.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in year 6 science about using energy from a variety of resources to generate electricity, and in year 7 science about some of the Earth's resources being renewable and others non-renewable. It introduces the different ways in which movement of water in the oceans can be harnessed for electricity generation.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining the elements of the year 6 achievement standard about describing how energy can be transformed from one form to another, and the year 7 achievement standard about the way in which resources are cycled through the Earth's systems and how they can be used sustainably. One method of transforming the kinetic energy of ocean currents into electricity is described.
  • The resource is relevant to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the eighth organising idea about designing actions for sustainability. It outlines the potential for future use and savings in carbon dioxide emissions that can be achieved by using the movement of water in the oceans for electricity generation.
