TLF ID M012759

This is a review of a 2012 dance performance titled 'Kentaro!! brings contemporary Japanese dance and choreography to Mumbai'. Kentaro!! is a contemporary Japanese dancer. The review articulates the dancer's style as a combination of street and hip-hop with a mix of dance, mime and movement. The resource also includes a clip of the performance, 'After raining, it will be sunny', and two further clips can be found on YouTube via the hyperlinks listed toward the end of the review. Kentaro!! uses electronic music and writes his own lyrics. His choreography draws influence from the Japanese minimalist tradition.

Educational value
  • This is a resource of great value for the Responding strand of the Dance curriculum in lower secondary schooling. The content descriptions focus on students responding to dance and dance artists and considering the broader contexts of their works, and their contribution to the development of contemporary dance. The resource gives students the opportunity to examine the performance closely and to read the reviewer's comments about how the artist integrates aspects of Japanese minimalism with contemporary hip-hop, mime and street movements.
  • The resource contributes to students engaging with the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's relationship with Asia, particularly the fourth organising idea of the arts and literature of Asia influencing aesthetic and creative pursuits within Australia, the region and globally. The performance integrates both traditional and contemporary dance forms as a response to selected music that enhances the meaning of the artwork.
