Teacher guide Bushfire education: types of fires - good and bad

This is a teacher resource containing a lesson plan that provides guidelines for class discussion about why some fires are helpful while others cause problems, and includes suggestions for activities and games that will encourage awareness of fire safety. High-quality photographs that can be used to assist the discussion are provided. The resource includes a section on fires that help the land, including the burning practices of Indigenous Australians to promote regeneration, and lists useful references. This resource is part of the Bushfire Education website developed by Education Services Australia on behalf of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

  • This is a useful resource for year 2 science, particularly as it relates to how people use science in their daily lives to protect and care for the environment.
  • It also has relevance to year 4 geography, particularly the content descriptions in Geographical Knowledge and Understanding referring to the need to protect environments as habitats for animals and places of enjoyment for humans. It also looks at the connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to all environments in Australia and the development of knowledge and practices to sustain them.
  • This resource is also useful for the content descriptions in Geographical Inquiry and Skills referring to presenting geographic information using appropriate oral, graphic, written and visual communication forms, and using correct terminology.
  • The resource supports the general capability of Critical and creative thinking.
