This is an online resource that describes four different areas of habitation and provides a list of points for each area describing what to expect in the event of a bushfire, to assist people to understand their level of risk. The four areas of habitation are: close to or among grass or paddocks, close to or among forest and woodlands, near coastal scrub and where suburbs meet the bush or grasslands. This resource is provided by Country Fire Authority (CFA) Victoria.

  • This is a useful resource for year 5 geography, particularly for the content description in Geographical Knowledge and Understanding referring to the impact of bushfires on environments and communities and the need for careful management.
  • This is a useful resource for the Landforms and landscapes unit of study in year 8 geography. It is of particular use for the content description in Geographical Knowledge and Understanding referring to the causes and impacts of landscape hazards such as bushfires.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 5 geography that refer to recognising that the environment influences the human characteristics of a place and how places change due to human activity; and in year 8 geography that refer to describing measures used for landscape protection and hazard mitigation.
