Text Do-it-yourself podcast

TLF ID M012111

This resource for educators and students details a do-it-yourself podcast activity that gives students the opportunity to host a show featuring astronauts conducting experiments on the International Space Station, or NASA experts explaining scientific concepts. A set of NASA audio and video clips is provided, along with links to images and information on related topics including science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students choose from the information provided or conduct their own research to write a script for an audio or video production. Students can record narration and other scenes or interviews, and can incorporate their recordings, along with the NASA clips, to edit a final production piece.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the content description in year 7 science that refers to communicating ideas, findings and solutions to problems using scientific language and representations, and using digital technologies as appropriate. All of the materials required for students to communicate and explain ideas is provided, and the added value of students incorporating their own footage into the podcasts enhances the learning and communication skills. Digital technologies are used to support student engagement and communication skills.
  • This is a valuable resource for the content description in year 7 science that covers Earth's gravity pulling objects towards the centre of the Earth. Many of the podcasts explore microgravity or weightlessness, and a number explore Newton's laws and Earth's gravity. The breadth of topics provides many learning opportunities about gravity and microgravity.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 7 science in which they represent and predict the effects of unbalanced forces, including Earth's gravity, on motion. Microgravity and its effect on the behaviour of objects in space is compared to the behaviour of objects as influenced by Earth's gravity.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 7 science requiring communication of ideas, findings and solutions to problems using scientific language and representations, using digital technologies as appropriate
  • This resource supports the development of information and communication technology capability through students using the technology to create their podcasts, and literacy skills through writing and editing the scripts to be included in the podcasts.
