Learning objects Algebra four

TLF ID M012007

This is an interactive game for two students in which they solve algebraic equations, similar to 'Connect four'. The players can choose from problems that are one- or two-step, quadratic, have distributive properties or have variables on both sides, and more than one problem type can be chosen. The length of time each player will have, and the level of difficulty of the problems can also be selected. The players take turns to solve problems. Immediate feedback is provided and if neither player can solve the problem, the worked solution is displayed. Although all features of the game are easy to use, the Help tab, which can easily be accessed from the Activity screen, provides detailed information about how the activity can be varied.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This interactive resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content description in year 9 mathematics about applying the distributive law to the expansion of algebraic expressions and the content description in year 10 mathematics about solving simple quadratic equations.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standards by the end of years 9 and 10 about expanding binomial expressions and factorising monic quadratic expressions.
  • The capacity to vary the type and level of difficulty, and the length of time allowed for solving the problems, makes this resource suitable for students at differing levels of readiness. However, both players are required to solve the same types of problems.
