Learning objects Experimental probability

TLF ID M012005

This is an interactive resource that enables students to conduct virtual probability experiments using a spinner or a pair of dice. The student can manipulate the relative sizes of the different coloured segments of the spinner or the numbers on the faces of the dice to investigate the effect of these changes on probability. The outcome of each trial is recorded clearly in a table of tally marks and cumulative numerical values. The Help tab, which can easily be accessed from the Activity screen, provides detailed and useful information about how the activity can be varied, including how to change the type of spinner or dice.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This interactive resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content description in year 6 mathematics about conducting chance experiments using digital technologies. It provides students with the opportunity to generate a set of probability data from random events and to conduct a large number of trials in a short space of time.
  • The resource supports students exploring the frequency of a particular event when the likelihood of the outcome is manipulated.
