This is a web resource that contains mysterious photos of various aspects of planets in our solar system and shows how further space exploration helped to explain the mysteries. Each initial image has an engaging title, explains how the image was obtained and why the image was deemed to be mysterious. The subsequent image, as a result of further scientific investigation, helps to clarify what was captured in the first image. Planets such as Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and a moon of Uranus are the focus of the mysteries. Spectacular images, accompanied by interesting text, are a feature in this resource.

  • This resource may be of some use for the content description in year 5 science that refers to the Earth as part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the Sun). The mysterious images in this resource explore the idea of life on other planets, the causes of sudden surface changes on planets and features of moons that orbit other planets. The features and physical conditions of particular planets are explored in this resource.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 5 science through describing the key features of our solar system. Students can reinforce their knowledge of planetary physical conditions through exploring the mysterious planetary photos and accompanying text.
