This interactive game is about innovation in textile production in Britain in the 19th century. It focuses on the changes in the manufacturing of cotton, which shifted from the home to the factory with the advent of the steam engine. Students assume the role of advisor to a businessman who wants to manufacture cotton and has money to invest in establishing the enterprise. Some choices cost more than others. The businessman needs to begin selling cotton before the money runs out and he faces a debtor's prison.

  • This interactive game is a useful student resource for the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 relating to the technological innovations and other factors that influenced the industrialisation of Britain.
  • The resource develops students' knowledge about how the modernisation of industries affects workers. It explains how women and children were more employable than men in the new factories as they cost less and were easier to train. Students learn that the introduction of steam power made handloom weavers unable to compete for work with the factories.
  • This game is useful for the development of historical skills. Students select and use information as evidence in a historical argument about industrialisation.
