This is an illustrated and annotated timeline of the Ancient World, from the Palaeolithic era to the Norman era. The timeline moves through seven distinct eras: Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman. It includes images of the key sites and treasures from Britain's archaeological past and a quiz in which students place the eras and events of the past in correct order.

Educational value
  • This interactive timeline is useful for the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 8 about understanding the Viking relationship with the people of Britain. Students examine an image of Jarlshof in Shetland and study information about Viking attempts to establish a colony in Britain. They also view the Pitney brooch, which shows influences of Viking style and is regarded as an example of mixed English and Scandinavian style.
  • This resource develops the history skill of sequencing historical events, developments and eras in ancient history. Students practise matching a particular era, such as the Viking era, with its correct date and events.
