The interactive resource is about the discovery of an Iron Age chariot in a grave in the Yorkshire village of Wetwang in 2001. It has three parts: an account of the discovery of the burial site and the contents of the grave; a detailed explanation of the reconstruction of the chariot; and a quiz to test the knowledge gained about how to build the chariot.

  • This resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 7 relating to how historians and archaeologists investigate history, including excavations. It outlines the techniques and methods used in excavations, such as the removal of layers of soil, and explains how a study of the changes in the colour and composition of the soil can aid in the identification of an object that is no longer visible, having rotted away.
  • The resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 7 relating to the importance of conserving the remains of the ancient past. Students discover how archaeological sites and treasures can reflect the technology available to the people at the time and reveal something of their beliefs and value systems.
  • The resource may also make a contribution to students attaining the history achievement standards in year 7 in relation to explanation and communication, and has some relevance to the literacy capability and the critical and creative capability.
