Teacher guide Australia's national days - unit of work

TLF ID M009610

This is an extended unit of work about Australia's national days. Intended for upper primary students, the unit is organised around five focus questions: What special days do we commemorate in Australia? What activities do people undertake on these days? What do national days mean to Australian citizens? How have things changed over the years? How might they change in the future to the benefit of all Australians? The unit concludes with a self-evaluation activity.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for civics and citizenship, where national symbols and days are an important component of the primary curriculum. The unit emphasises four important days and the suggested student activities focus on why these days are important and how they have changed over the years, and provide opportunities for students to think about what the days mean and how one national day might change in the future.
  • Teachers of year 3 may also find that the unit usefully relates to the history curriculum's content description about the days and weeks that are celebrated or commemorated in Australia. While many of the teaching and learning strategies are too advanced for year 3 students, teachers may be able to scaffold the use of others. The list of resources on the Australian national days is extensive and helpful.
