Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. Rules and their fairness are an important part of the curriculum in the early years and lower primary. Using situations familiar to younger students, the sequence of lessons in the unit aims to ensure that children understand the purpose of rules and recognise the consequences of breaking them.
  • The unit's suggested activities are appropriate for the intended learners. They include, for example, using a digital curriculum resource on the interactive whiteboard to establish fair rules in a soccer game and explore the consequences of arbitrary changes to the rules. They also include a De Bono's 'Six Thinking Hats' activity based on the text 'Boss for a week'.
