Teacher guide Globetrotters' Japan: places - foreigners on the tourist circuit in Meiji Japan, 1890s - essay by Allen Hockley

TLF ID M007100

This is a collection of online materials that centre on a richly illustrated historical essay about the places in Japan visited by 'globetrotters' (international tourists) in the late 1890s. Linked to various sections of the essay are a complete tourist guide of the time, advertisements from the guide, a map of Japan with magnifier, and photographs of nine popular destinations accompanied by descriptions from travellers' accounts and guidebooks of the time.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This collection of materials, rich in primary and secondary sources, is valuable for history in year 9, particularly for the comparative depth studies of cities in Asia and Australia. Among the Japanese cities featured in the illustrated essay by Allen Hockley are Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Kobe and Nagasaki. As the collection contains photographs of Shogunate-era buildings, it could also be useful for the year 8 depth study on Shogunate Japan.
  • This collection provides valuable primary and secondary source materials that reveal an often-overlooked effect of the opening of Japan to the West - the influx of globetrotting tourists in the late 19th century. The materials offer a view of famous locations in Japan as experienced by Western tourists, and give an idea of the demand for local products and services generated by the globetrotters.
  • Hockley is Associate Professor of Art History at Dartmouth College and his essay shows how a historian can use an online essay format to present a historical explanation and support it with convincing visual and textual evidence. Hockley discusses four major topics: globetrotter tourism; travelling Meiji Japan; the business of photography; and souvenir albums.
