The album was compiled by photographer Felice Beato. Linked to various sections of the essay are: a companion set of materials on the people Beato photographed; panoramas of Yokohama, Edo and Nagasaki; and facsimiles of the photographs' captions.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This collection provides primary and secondary sources valuable for historical studies of Japan in the period after the opening of the country to the West. It is most useful for history in year 9, particularly for the comparative depth studies of cities in Asia and Australia. It is also of value in years 11 and 12 modern history, particularly for an overview of Japan from the Meiji Restoration to 1905.
  • Beato's photographs of the capital and the treaty ports, as seen in the essay and its links, are significant and the analysis in the essay adds value. While containing numerous errors and misconceptions, the linked captions are also significant. They reveal aspects of Japanese locations and culture as viewed through Western eyes.
  • The essay by Allen Hockley, Associate Professor of Art History at Dartmouth College, shows how a historian can use an online essay format to put forward ideas and support them with rich visual evidence. Hockley focuses on four important aspects of Beato's album: the business of photography; the Tōkaidō and Kamakura; Edo and Yokohama; and journey's end, Nagasaki.
