Educational value
  • The 'Red Jessie' section of the 'Uncommon lives' showcase offers a wealth of sources and detailed analysis of Street's life. These are valuable for studying Street's campaigns for human rights, examining the effect of the Cold War on her activities and on civil liberties in general, and for highlighting the information about citizens recorded on government files. The showcase contains more than 50 primary sources such as photographs and government memos and 20 secondary sources, including clippings from newspapers of the time.
  • The sources concentrate on three important themes: Street's active life; the government minutes and memos about her; and how her activities were recorded in the files of secret intelligence organisations. A detailed timeline is also available along with lists of references and of all the records. These resources are particularly useful for studies in the curriulum areas of History and Civics and citizenship.
  • The showcase shows how historical text can be communicated effectively in the online environment. The National Archives of Australia has presented a detailed historical account and supported it with a comprehensive range of evidence drawn from its own vast holdings and from the National Library of Australia.
