Educational details

Educational value
  • The collection of resources on the Chinese Australians exhibit page is valuable for any detailed historical study of Chinese people in Australia, particularly for studies of how colonial and federal governments interacted with Chinese Australians.  The exhibit contains 18 primary-source documents and photographs from government files dating from 1885 to 1952, including the document seen here.
  • The sources focus on five main areas of information about Chinese people filed by Australian governments  - naturalisation (citizenship); permanent residence; admission to Australia for study; exemption from the dictation test; and alien (non-citizen) registration.
  • The document and the linked exhibit page illustrate how a cultural institution, such as a national archive, can communicate historical text, making available relevant primary sources from its vast range of holdings in an online environment.
