Teacher guide Globetrotters' Japan: people - foreigners on the tourist circuit in Meiji Japan, 1890s

TLF ID M006700

This is a collection of online materials focusing on 19th century photographs of 'traditional' Japanese people, many illustrating aspects of life in the feudal era of Japanese history before 1868. The photographs were intended for international tourists (globetrotters) in the late 1890s. The online materials consist of an illustrated essay by Associate Professor Allen Hockley; 15 sets of photographs; a database of information about all 138 photographs in the collection; and a link to an 1880s tourist guide to Japan (see dropdown menu under Globetrotters' Japan: people).

Educational value
  • This collection provides a wealth of resources for historical studies of Japan in the 19th century. Because many of the posed photographs were anachronistic in the 1890s, this makes them valuable for the year 8 History depth study of Shogunate Japan, particularly the late period in the 1850s and 60s. The images are also useful for the year 9 history elective depth study of Asia and the world.
  • The highlight of this collection is the Visual Narratives section. These show the 138 photographs of people that featured in the Captain Frank Brinkley’s 10-volume publication 'Japan'. The Narratives are presented in 15 themes including fishing and gathering shellfish, peddlers, and women and children.
  • The illustrated essay is available as a separate resource complete with its own specific description of educational value. In general, the essay is very useful for student development of visual literacy. It also provides an example of how a historian develops an argument and supports it with rich visual evidence.
