Teacher guide Globetrotters' Japan: places - foreigners on the tourist circuit in Meiji Japan, 1890s

TLF ID M006699

This is a collection of online materials focusing on late 19th century photographs of tourist destinations in Japan, including places of natural beauty, cities and temple complexes. The photographs were intended for international tourists (globetrotters) in the 1890s. The materials in the collection consist of an illustrated essay by Associate Professor Allen Hockley; nine sets of photographs; and a database of information about all 110 photographs in the collection (see dropdown menu under Globetrotters' Japan: places).

Educational value
  • This collection of materials, rich in primary and secondary sources, is valuable for history in year 9, particularly for the elective depth study of Asia and the world. As the collection contains photographs of Shogunate-era buildings, it could also be useful for the year 8 depth study on Shogunate Japan.
  • The highlight of this collection is the Visual Narratives section. It presents 110 hand-tinted photographs of scenes and places, organised into nine Narratives, each about a different location. All the photographs have links to relevant pages of description from an 1880 edition of W Keeling's ‘Tourists' guide’. The photographs themselves come from Captain Frank Brinkley’s 1897-98 ten-volume publication ‘Japan’.
  • The illustrated essay is available as a separate resource complete with its own specific description of educational value. In general, the essay describes an often-overlooked effect of Western imperialism in Asia - the influx of globetrotting tourists in the late 19th century.
