This is a stainless-steel and die-castmetal Sunbeam Café-series toaster manufactured by Sunbeam Corporation, China, in 2004. At the top are four wide bread slots. On one of the long sides, there are two levers and two browning knobs with numbers from one to six printed on them. There are also two pairs of buttons labelled 'CANCEL' and 'CRUMPET'. Each 'CRUMPET' button has a small red light (not illuminated). At the base of the toaster is a tray labelled 'PUSH'. Each pair of bread slots is able to be operated independently. The packaging (not shown) consists of a colour-printed cardboard box, instructional booklet and guarantee card.

  • This toaster is part of Sunbeam's Café-series range of products inspired by heavy-duty industrial cooking equipment. The range also includes coffee machines, sandwich grills, a blender and a milkshake maker. The range is a response to the rise of consumer interest in making café-style food at home. It also reflects trends in the marketplace towards 'affordable luxury' goods.
  • Toasters have always been an important part of Sunbeam's product range. The Sunbeam pop-up toaster was first launched in Australia in 1955 at the beginning of the appliance 'revolution' in Australia. In 1989, in response to increasing market competition, the Australian-designed Toast Two (or Toast 'n' Crumpets) range was created. It featured new toasting technology to control toasting colour to great accuracy and to enable crumpets to be cooked without burning. The crumpet-toasting technology continues to feature in the Café-series toaster.
  • Founded in the USA, the Australian history of Sunbeam dates back to 1904 when a small branch of the US-based Chicago Flexible Shaft Company opened in Sydney. The Company later became Cooper Engineering Company and in 1946 its name changed to Sunbeam as its focus shifted to small appliances. Sunbeam in Australia remained part of the US parent company until it became Australian-owned in 1987. In 2005 Sunbeam Australia was part of the Australasian manufacturing and marketing company GUD Holdings, along with the Victa, Davey, Oates and Ryco companies.
