Learning objects Exploring atoms: ion builder

TLF ID L2565

Explore subatomic particles and how they combine to form atoms. Compare different ways of modelling atoms. Use nuclear symbols to represent different isotopes. Build ions by combining protons, neutrons and electrons. This learning object is one in a series of six objects. Three of the objects are also packaged as a combined learning object.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students assemble ions from protons, neutrons and electrons.
  • Students interpret nuclear symbols.
Educational value
  • Introduces subatomic particles and the internal structure of atoms.
  • Introduces isotopes and nuclear symbols.
  • Illustrates the shell and ‘electron cloud’ models of the atom.
  • Enables students to build authentic models of ions of the first ten elements.
