Learning objects Making music: match that sound

TLF ID L1194

Make musical notes by plucking a stringed instrument. Explore how a vibrating string creates pressure waves through the air. Look at graphs showing sounds as a waveform. Explore the relationships between string length, musical pitch and wave frequency. Compare musical notes with soundwave patterns and predict one from the other. Match sounds correctly to score points. This learning object is one in a series of four objects. The series is also packaged as a combined learning object.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students explore how sounds are caused by vibrating objects.
  • Students adjust the length of a string to change the frequency of vibrations and produce musical notes with a range of pitches.
  • Students compare musical notes with soundwave patterns and predict one from the other.
Educational value
  • Students explore how a range of sounds are generated by a stringed instrument.
  • Students identify relationships between string length, vibration frequency and pitch.
  • Students recognise patterns within sound waveforms and identify sounds corresponding to them.
  • Randomised generation of sounds supports repeated use.
  • Pattern matching activities include three skill levels that progressively increase in difficulty.
