Tasmanian Department of Education literacy and numeracy strategy: Raising the Bar

Abstract

Raising the Bar is a Tasmanian Government strategy designed to increase the number of students completing primary school with functional literacy skills. It has been implemented in selected Tasmanian Government schools for the last five years, and has successfully improved student outcomes.

Raising the Bar strengthens school leadership, engages teachers with targeted professional learning, implements whole-school approaches to literacy, and effectively monitors and tracks students. Key elements include sharing best practice across the state, and helping teachers use student outcome data to monitor and evaluate literacy and numeracy teaching and learning. Participating schools continue to develop their literacy improvement plans, while maintaining their commitment to targeted professional learning and a whole-school approach to literacy.
