Coaching Initiatives

Abstract

The Coaching Initiatives strategy was implemented over four years in a range of Victorian primary and secondary government schools. It included literacy, Koorie literacy, and teaching and learning focused on mathematics and science.

Over a five-year period, 270 coaches participated in the strategy. Coaches were trained and provided with ongoing professional learning to build their knowledge, coaching expertise, and familiarity with Department of Education and Early Childhood Development resources. The coaches then worked one-on-one, in-class with teachers to build the teachers' capacity to improve student outcomes. The number and variety of coaches, schools, teachers and students involved in this strategy indicate it could be successfully replicated in a variety of settings.
