So today we are learning to read words that we don't know and there are some things that we have to do to be successful. Number one, I am going to say the first sound. Then I'm going to chunk the end sound. I'm going to read the whole word. And the last thing is, I have to be curious. Okay. Let's have a look at our book today. The title of our book is 'Pig the pug' by Aaron Blabey. Pig, pug. Both of those words start with the same sound. P-pig and p-pug. Here are my two words. P-pig, p-pug. Pig the pug. Let's have a look at our story tray. Here is Pig the pug and I can see all of his dog toys. Hm. Why has he got them piled up like that? And why is Pig the pug standing on top of all of his toys? That's made me very curious to find out what happens,
Pig the pug. Pig was a pug and I'm sorry to say he was greedy and selfish in most every way. He's even written mine on his bowl. Well that's very selfish. He lived in a flat with a sausage dog, Trevor, but when was he nice to him? I'll tell you, never! 'You've got some great toys there.' poor Trevor would say, but Pig would just grumble, 'They're mine! Go away!' Ah. These are the toys that we saw on the story tray. Those toys belong to Pig the pug. 'But it might be more fun?' said Trevor to Pig 'if we both played together?' Well, Pig flipped his …. I have just noticed this word looks like the other word that we looked at. On the title we have the word Pig, but this word doesn't have 'P' at the start. This word has 'W' at the start. 'W' and the chunk is 'ig'. I have to read it all together. W-ig, wig. Wig.
Well, Pig flipped his wig. That makes sense. 'No, they are mine. Are you deaf? Only mine. You keep your paws off them you sausage-shaped swine. I know what your game is, you want me to share but I'll never do that! I won't and I swear.' And with that, he proceeded to gather his stuff and make a big pile with a huff and a puff. There's his pile of toys. And once he had gathered them up in a pile, he howled from the top with a satisfied smile. 'There!' shouted Pig 'now you won't get my loot. It's my mine, mine, mine. So why don't you scoot?' but just at that moment, poor Trevor did see, the pile was wobbling. Oh dear me. 'Watch out up there!' good Trevor did cry, but the shame of it was, well, pigs cannot fly. Oh no Pig the pug fell out of the window. He wasn't watching from the top of his pile of toys. These days it's different. I'm happy to say it's so very different in most every way. Yes Pig shares his toys now and Trevor's his friend and they both play together while Pig's on the mend. Oh no. Pig is all wrapped in bandages after he fell from the window, poor Pig the pug.
Okay. Now that we've finished reading the book, I want to make some new words using one of the words from the book. And that word is pug. P-ug. Pug . Okay, let's write that word up first. P-ug. Pug. Okay. Let's see if I can make another word. Let's try 'd', can you help me? D-ug. Dug, Let's write that down. Dug. Okay, let's try another one. M-ug. Mug! Yes! You can have a drink from a mug. Let's write that down. M-ug. Mug. How about 'b' at the start? What word would that make? Hmm. B-ug, bug yes, let's write that down, b-ug, bug, I can see all my words have the same chunk at the end. Ug. Can you see that too? Let's try another sound at the start. H-ug, hug. Yes. Let's write that one down. H-ug. Hug. Now this time I'd like to put two letters at the start and let's see if we can make another word. This part will say 'sl'. And the chunk at the end we have to keep the same. Ug. So it will be sl-ug, slug yes, let's write that one down. Sl-ug. Wow. Because I knew that first word, pug, look at how many other words I can read. I can read pug, dug, mug, bug hug, slug. Wow. All because I was using my success criteria and now I know that I can read all of those words and I used that strategy when I was reading the book. Remember? I read pig and wig.
I would like to challenge you to make some different words at home using a different chunk at the end. So in the book I used pig and pug. Remember? And I wrote lots of words, but I want you to use this word. Let me show you. It's going to have 'd' at the start and the chunk at the end will be 'og'. This word is D-og, dog. Hmm. Do you think you'll be able to think of lots of words? Let me give you a clue for your next one, maybe you could put 'c' the start and then write the 'og' part. C-og, cog. So don't forget you have to change the first sound. Keep the chunk at the end and then read the whole word so you will know what the word is and write lots of words just like me.
