STEM Pack 1: Unconscious Bias

Students explore the latest STEM careers – the science and the scientists – through videos, research and discussion.

The STEM Careers Packs aim to make students aware of the wide variety of STEM careers. They help students understand the importance of scientific knowledge, how science influences society, and how society influences science (i.e. Science as a Human Endeavour).

During their explorations, students will appreciate how the different areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics interact and are interdependent, whilst developing STEM literacies and competencies.

This first pack tackles what Unconscious Bias is and how it can be a barrier to scientific study. The activities included ask students to examine what they think they already know and discuss the benefits of looking at things from a different perspective.

This is a great opportunity for students to start using their ‘scientific brain’ – separating fact from feeling, and analysing subjects logically.

These techniques could be used across the curriculum to benefit students in every area of their studies, not just STEM subjects, and provide an interesting insight into basic psychology at work in our everyday lives.
