Catalyst: Hemp is not a weed!

SUBJECTS:  Science, Technologies

YEARS:  9–10

You may have heard about the cannabis plant and its use as the drug marijuana. But did you know it has two main varieties, one of them commonly called hemp?

See how hemp differs from its 'cousin'. Find out more about the characteristics of hemp that make it a 'green' crop with plenty of potential.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Wool is a natural fibre that comes from sheep. You may know that cotton comes from a plant, but from which part of the plant? Hemp is also used as a natural textile fibre. Which part of the hemp plant do you think produces strong fibres?
  2. 2.What are the two main types of cannabis plant? What makes one type an illegal plant? What benefit does hemp have over its illegal cousin? In which products does the clip say hemp is an ingredient? What two qualities make it a useful fibre? What three characteristics make it potentially eco-friendly?
  3. 3.What reason is given for hemp not being an eco-friendly super crop? Is this justified? Why or why not? Compare the production of two natural fibres: cotton and hemp. How does each compare in terms of sustainable production? How do these fibres compare? What textile products are made from each type of fibre?
  4. 4.Do an online search for hemp clothing and hemp products. What range is available for each? How do companies market their products? What features of hemp do they promote? If they address the marijuana issue, how do they do it? Create a 30-second advertisement for a company that intends to market its hemp products.
