Who is tall that you know?

For a person, what height would you say is tall?

In this clip we see what it means to measure the length of something compared to measuring the height of something. Find out the height of the tallest person in the world, measured in centimetres. Compare that to your own height. You'll be amazed how tall that really is!

Things to think about

  1. 1.Estimate (guess) the length of an ant in millimetres. Estimate the length of a rabbit in centimetres. Have a guess at the height of a giraffe in metres.| Do you know your height in centimetres? What is it?|Who is the tallest person in your family? What is their height?
  2. 2.Watch for the length of the ant, rabbit and height of the giraffe. Compare these to your guesses. How close were you? |What example is used to describe measuring length? What example is used to describe measuring height? |Are you taller or shorter than the average height of a student in Year 3? How tall is the tallest person in the world in centimetres?
  3. 3.Create a picture graph of the height of people in your family. Put them in order from shortest to tallest. |Compare yourself to the height of the tallest person in the world. How much shorter are you? Now double your height. Are you now taller, shorter or equal in height to the tallest person? Draw a picture to show you, double your height, next to the world's tallest person. Add heights in cm.
  4. 4.If you have a pet, estimate its length and then carefully measure it. Try using a string and then measure the length of string with a ruler. How close were you with your guess?|Estimate the height of a pet dog or a cat taken from the ground to the top of its head. Check your guess by measuring it in centimetres. Is the pet animal longer or taller? Check its length to find out.
