Mixed Up Maths, Ep 12: Super Cyril's circus supplies

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  5–6

Do you know how to draw up a budget?

Find out how it's done. In our example our host is throwing a circus party and has $100 to spend. See how he plans to spend the money.

Throw in a few discounts of 10% and 50% and look what he can afford. Does he mange to stick to his budget?

Things to think about

  1. 1.You've got friends coming over to watch a movie and stay overnight. You have $50 to spend. A budget lists the items you plan to buy and their price. It helps keep a tally of the costs. Draw up a budget to show how you would spend the $50. Use approximate prices. Make sure you stick within budget!
  2. 2.How does the host plan to spend his $100? What amount is he planning to spend on each attraction? The human cannonball was $50 but how much with a discount of 10% off? Two lions were $80. How much with a discount of 50% off? What do you think of his budget and how he spent his $100?
  3. 3.In what ways is a budget useful? If you had $100 to spend on gifts for your family how would you plan to spend that? Write down some suggestions for gifts with their approximate costs. Create a table of data showing the 'percentage off' goods costing $100 and $200. Include 10% off, 20% off, 25% off and 75% off. To work out 10% off $100, multiply 100 by 1/10 or 0.1. That is $10. So the discounted price is $90. What pattern do you notice when you compare the discounts?
  4. 4.If the human cannonball was discounted by 25% and the lions discounted by 75% instead of by 50%, how much extra would our host have to spend? Would you advise to try and fit in the knife thrower as an extra at $45? How would that fit with the budget and his plan?
