First Tuesday Book Club: The story behind 'Jasper Jones'

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

'Jasper Jones' is a novel that recently featured on a list of '10 Aussie books to read before you die'.

Does it belong on the list? Many texts make connections to other texts but is this novel too close a retelling of the classic American novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird'? Explore the concept of 'intertextuality' in this clip.

Things to think about

  1. 1.The term 'intertextuality' is created by adding a combination of affixes (prefixes and suffixes) to a simple root word: inter + TEXT + ual + ity. Look up the meanings of these affixes and write a definition for 'intertextuality' based on what you learn.
  2. 2.What genre of novel did Craig Silvey set out to write? What similarities do the panellists note between 'Jasper Jones' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird'? What problems does Marieke Hardy identify with Craig Silvey's handling of this connection? Which other writer does Craig Silvey reference in 'Jasper Jones'?
  3. 3.Whether 'Jasper Jones' draws too heavily on 'To Kill a Mockingbird' or not becomes a point of contention between Marieke Hardy and the others. What's your view? Is this connection a strength or weakness of the novel? Similarly, Marieke Hardy feels that a thirteen-year-old protagonist reading William Faulkner is 'pretentious' while Jason Steger thinks it is 'remarkable'. Who do you agree with?
  4. 4.Find out the genre for which 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and the novels of William Faulkner, such as 'As I Lay Dying', are often given as examples. What are the main attributes of this genre? Why do you think Craig Silvey chose to reference these particular books?
