Pet Superstars: Alpacas: No hump but spits like a camel

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4

Meet Kai the alpaca, an animal that is a bit like a camel.

Listen as Cassandra talks about the alpaca's fleece (body covering), how it lives in herds and what it eats.

See the two types of alpaca breed: Huacaya and Suri.

How are they different? The clue is in their fleece.

Things to think about

  1. 1.To look after a pet animal, what do you need to know? Alpacas are from the same family as camels. Imagine having an alpaca as a pet.
  2. 2.Look closely at the alpacas. Use some words to describe them. What sound do alpacas make? Why is it best to have at least two alpacas? How are alpacas similar to sheep? What do alpacas eat?
  3. 3.Draw an alpaca. Add words to describe it. Show the types of food it eats. Compare an alpaca with a sheep. What is similar about them? What is different? Where would each type of animal live?
  4. 4.Sheep have hard hooves. Find out how an alpaca hoof is different from sheep hooves. Alpacas live in herds. What other animals live in herds? What are some good things about living in a herd? There are times when there is not much food. Could living in a herd be a problem at those times? Why?
