Heywire: Volunteers needed! Motivate your audience

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  7–8

We've all been bored by speakers who don't seem to know what their audience might be interested in.

As you listen to her Heywire audio clip, explore inspirational 16-year-old Tameika Schultz's skill in appealing to her listeners.

Could you write or record a similar story about yourself and/or your community?

The ABC's Heywire competition calls for stories from 16-22 year olds in regional Australia. Enter to get your story featured on the ABC and score an all-expenses-paid trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra. More: https://www.abc.net.au/heywire/

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever done any volunteer work? Maybe you've helped out on 'Clean Up Australia Day' or read to kindergarten students at a local school. If you have, how did it feel? Is this an experience you'd like to have again?
  2. 2.What made Tameika start volunteering in the first place? Why do you think Tameika points out that she doesn't do 'the horrible jobs'? What sorts of details about volunteering does Tameika focus on instead? How do we know Tameika enjoys volunteering? Why does she particularly like the woman? What does Tameika ask her audience to do?
  3. 3.What do you think is Tameika's purpose in sharing her story? Who do you think she regards as her main audience? How has Tameika tried to make volunteering sound appealing to this audience? Don't forget to consider the full range of audio effects she uses in her story.
  4. 4.Imagine you are a reporter who has heard about this inspiring 16-year-old volunteer. Write a human interest story about Tameika and the work she does. Select details and use language to make Tameika sound like a remarkable 'modern-day kid'.
