What is your favourite way to eat rice?

This clip shows how rice is planted, grown and harvested in many different countries (places in the world).

View the different foods made with rice.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Do you like eating rice? How many things can you think of that are made with rice? Rice comes from a plant. How do you think rice plants grow?
  2. 2.Notice the different ways rice is grown and eaten in other places. What does rice need to grow? How do the rice plants change as they grow and ripen? Does the rice plant remind you of any other plants?
  3. 3.In what ways do machines help the rice farmer? What do the rice plants need to grow? What if there was no river near the rice fields? Where does the farmer get seeds from to grow new rice plants? Hint: what did the rice grains (kernels) look like? Try planting some grains of rice. Water them for 10 days and watch what happens.
  4. 4.Rice is a grain. Find out some other grains that we eat. Look at pictures of how these grains grow. How are the plants the same or different from the rice plants? Do you know any other plants that look like this? Try to find the name that we give to this group of plants.
