SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  3–4

The Last Post is played during Anzac Day ceremonies and at military funerals.

Watch this clip to find out what this bugle call means, especially for someone who has lost a family member in war.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What music and symbols do people in your family or community use to remember people who have died?
  2. 2.Listen to the tune that is playing. Have you heard it before? What do you see in the old photographs? What two things does the Last Post signify (mean)? What does the lady think about when she hears the Last Post? What do you see on the brick wall?
  3. 3.How does hearing the Last Post make you feel? Would it mean something different to people who have lost someone in a war? Why is the Last Post played at Anzac Day ceremonies? What does the clip show as some of the ways that help people remember those who have died?
  4. 4.A memorial helps us remember aspects of the past that are important to us. Create a memorial for a person, an event or experience that you would like to remember. Your memorial could be a display for a shelf, a poster, a book, an album or a slideshow. Think about photographs, objects, words and symbols that represent this special person or event. You could even include some music.
