ABC News: Food security in Australia

SUBJECTS:  GeographyTechnologies

YEARS:  9–10

How much food does Australia produce, and what does this mean for food security in Australia?

Watch this clip to find out about the factors that influence food production and crop yields, and also about the role that science and technology play.

How will future population growth affect global food production and security?

Things to think about

  1. 1.Do all countries and regions in the world produce enough food to feed their populations? Can you think of some challenges to food production, such as natural ones or those created by human activity? 'Food security' is a term often used to describe the availability of, and access to, food. Does everyone in the world enjoy food security? What things might affect future global food security?
  2. 2.At the beginning of the clip, the presenter describes Australia's ability to feed its nation. How does he explain it? Soil in many parts of Australia are naturally infertile. What mineral/s do they lack? What other natural factors or human activities affect agricultural production and yields in Australia? What food items are CSIRO scientists trying to improve and how?
  3. 3.Describe some of the constraints on agricultural production in Australia and the factors that affect high crop yields. How can agricultural technologies and organisations like CSIRO address some of these issues? What concerns are sometimes raised about these new, innovative technologies? This may require further research. Find and use a free online map-making site. Download a map of Australia and mark in the major food-producing regions.
  4. 4.The clip concludes with the presenter identifying a projected world population of nine billion people by 2050. He then states that 'maintaining food security will be an inescapable challenge of the future'. Do you agree? What key points do you base your viewpoint on? Find out more about the major 'biomes' around the world, including the influence of climate on production.
