BTN: Ramadan

SUBJECTS:  Geography, History

YEARS:  3–4

What's your big event for the year?

For over one billion people worldwide it is Ramadan, a month of prayer and fasting for Muslims.

Find out the origin of Ramadan and how Muslims celebrate this month-long religious festival.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What days of the year are special celebrations for you? Make a table to show your special days, the reason each one is special, and a short description of the things you do on that day. Share your list with someone else.
  2. 2.A calendar is shown flipping though the months, stopping at August. Why? During Ramadan people fast (don't eat) while it's daylight. What do they do in the time they would usually eat? Watch how the end of Ramadan is celebrated.
  3. 3.List the main points about Ramadan. Find out which Islamic countries observe Ramadan and mark them on a map.
  4. 4.The end of Ramadan is marked by a big celebration called 'Eid-ul-Fitr', the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. Do some research to find out what foods are eaten during this celebration.
