Count Us In, Ep 12: Will it Rain Today?

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

What is the chance for Flynn and Dodly that it will rain at the beach?

Dodly takes his umbrella and gumboots just in case it rains, and his scarf and gloves in case it gets cold.

Explore the language of chance with the two monsters.

What is the chance Dodly will pick a blue lolly out of the bag of four lollies?

Things to think about

  1. 1.Think about what is likely and what is unlikely. Is it likely to rain today? Is it more likely to rain when it's cloudy or when it's sunny? At what time of year is it most likely to be hot enough outside to go to the beach? When is it most likely you might go to the snow?
  2. 2.Listen to the types of words used to describe chance (likely, unlikely, certain, impossible). Who has the better chance of winning the hole-digging competition between Flynn and Dodly? Why?
  3. 3.Give some examples of things that are likely to happen today. What is unlikely? What is impossible? What are you certain will happen? Draw or make a list of things that are impossible, unlikely, likely and certain.
  4. 4.Put some counters of different colours into a bag. Is the chance you will pick out a blue one likely or unlikely? Why? Take out one counter at a time. Can you change the colours to make it more likely that a blue counter will be picked out? Can you make it impossible for a blue counter to be picked out?
